English has never been the only language in use over the British Isles , and it certainly is not now!

English has never been the only language in use over the British Isles , and it certainly is not now! Welsh is still used in Wales. Some Welsh people still speak it as their mother tongue , and it is widely taught in Welsh schools. Some people in Scotland and in Ireland still use a language that is related to Welsh. It is called Gaelic. These languages have a long history in these islands - longer than the history of English. In addition , people from

overseas have settled in England quite recently during this century. In some industrial cities , though not generally in Britain , you find groups of people who speak Polish , and other groups speaking the languages of the Indian subcontinent. A survey of North London schools in the early 1980' s found that nearly a third of the children spoke a language other than English at home.

The majority of the 55 million people living in England use English all the time. Standard English , that is , written English , is in use throughout Britain. Spoken English , however , sounds very different in different parts of the country. There is a story , a play. by the famous writer George Bernard Shaw , about a professor of English Language who can tell you someone' s address when he hears that person speak! That is exaggeration of course. Not even a Professor , who has studied the sounds of English all his life , can really do that. However ,it is true hat most people who have lived for a long time in Britain can tell a number of things about the people as soon as they speak! Usually we cannot tell the speaker' s address

, but we can guess the part of the country where the person comes from. We can tell how well educated he or she is too! If an international user of English , like anyone of you here , happens to meet speakers from , say , the North or the West of England , you may find them hard to understand. Unless you understand what is going on your confidence in your ability to use the language may be badly shaken.

36. Gaelic is related to Welsh. ()

37. Welsh is not taught in schools anymore. ()

38. One third of the 55 million people in England speak other languages besides English at home ()

39. Written English is in use throughout Britain but spoken English sounds different in different parts of the country. ()

40. Most people who have lived for a long time in Britain can tell how well educated a person is by the way he/ she speaks. ()

We show an amazing tolerance for a form of pollution that is a growing problem: noise. Airplane traf

fic is increasing by five percent a year. Urban noise is doubling every ten years. By air, land and sea, we are facing an onslaught of noise that is threatening our ability to live in this world. We have granted ourselves the right to make noise. But what about our responsibilities? Have we developed a sense of acoustic responsibility?

The evidence suggests that we have not. Many people seem to believe they have an unlimited right to make noise with cars and motorbikes, and with loud music at home and in the street. In some countries measures have been taken to force people to make less noise. In Britain, for example, a law has been passed preventing people from disturbing their neighbors with music at night.

It is widely accepted that we should deal with our rubbish in a responsible way Noise is in reality a particularly insidious form of rubbish. It destroys community life, pursues us into our homes, keeps us from sleeping and is the cause of many stress-related illnesses, as well as hearing loss. Our acoustic environment belongs to all of us. Everyone has the right to use it, but no one has the right to abuse it. Let’s start using it responsibly.

1. The underlined word “acoustic” in the first paragraph probably means ________.

A. environment B. pollution C. sound D. rubbish

2. Which of the following statements is NOT correct?

A. Nowadays everyone thinks it’s all right to make noise.

B. British law protects people from their neighbors’ music at night.

C. The level of noise produced in cities is twice as high now as ten years ago.

D. Noise can sometimes cause hearing loss.

3. The passage is probably written to _______.

A. introduce acoustic responsibility B. call for people to make less noise

C. compare rubbish and noise D. describe people’s attitude to noise

Passage 2

How can we ease the process of coming to terms with a new culture?Everyone going to work or study in an alien culture for any length of time will experience culture shock. Sooner or later frustrations and despondency stemming from trying to come to terms with unfamiliar ways will arise. However , it' s possible to take steps to lessen the severity of culture shock and to hasten adjustment to the culture of the new country , to the host culture.

First , newcomers need to remember that the host culture has its own reasons for doing things in a certain way. When you run up against difficulties , try to avoid the simple assumption that people are behaving in an unreasonable or hostile fashion. Be more charitable. Assume instead that your expectations were thwarted because you didn' t yet quite grasp the local ways. Suspend judgment until you are sure you understand the case fully.

Such understanding can come from several sources. One of the most important is from those who come from the same cultural background , who have gone through the same experience and successfully adjusted to life in the new environment. Adaptation is on occasion a two-way process. British workers in a Japanese factory in England have to learn to adapt to the different work practices imported by their Japanese managers from Japan; at the same time the latter have to become acclimatized to life in England....

21. Only a few people may experience culture shock when they come to a new culture.

22. It is important to understand that different cultures have different ways of doing things.

23. People tend to show hostile behavior. when they are in a foreign country.

24. It is useful to talk to people who are newly adjusted to the new culture.

25. It is enough for the newcomers in a culture to adapt themselves.

第6题

Many people, including some policemen, believe eye contact is a good test of honesty.
If someone can't look at you directly in the eye, then he or she is not playing honestly, they insist. After many experiments, however, a number of experts have found out that good liars can make false eye contact.

Eye contact, though not a sure sign of dishonesty, is a clear way to show interest in another person. When a person looks at you and continues to do so, you know his attention is placed on you. When he turns his head away, his mind is probably elsewhere. But there are exceptions. A shy person may have trouble making and keeping eye contact, no matter how interested he is in the other person. And certain nationalities, such as the British and Germans, are much less oriented to eye-to-eye contact than, say, the French and the Arabs.

Eye contact should be natural, not forced or overdone.

Have short periods of eye contact while you watch other parts of the person's face — especially the mouth. When the person smiles, be sure to smile back. But always make an effort to return your gaze to the person's eyes as she speaks. It is common to look up, down, and all around when speaking to others, and not have eye contact at all times.

Too much eye contact, especially if it is forced, can work against you. If you stare at a person, or leer in a suspicious way, the other person may feel uncomfortable and even suspicious about your intent. A fixed stare can seem like aggressive behavior. if it is a challenge as to who will look away first.

A Mumbai based but British made movie, Slumdog Millionaire took the most Oscars in Hollywood

last week. Starring a cast (演员阵容) of unknown actors, the movie won eight awards including best

picture and best director. The movie follows the life of an 18-year-old boy who's grown up in the slums

(贫民窟) of Mumbai, India.

The boy ends up winning money and love when he makes it onto a popular TV game show.

In spite of the film's Success at the Academy Awards, Indians have mixed feelings about Slumdog.

The argument about how the movie portrays (描述) India began when it hit cinemas.

The film is set in the poor and cruel society of one of Mumbai's slums. In one scene, the hero jumps

into a smelly open-air toilet to run after a pop star. That world, though real to hundreds of millions of

Indians, is very different to how modem India sees itself. Many Indian audiences feel uncomfortable with

the film's portraying of India as a slum land.

Several well-respected local Indian filmmakers have said the story has been tailored for western

audiences. Veteran Bollywood star, Amitabh Bachchan, said the film portrayed India as a" Third World,

dirty developing nation."

Even some of those who like the movie are unhappy with its title. People who live in slums have taken

to the streets with signs that read: "Don't call us dogs" and "I am not a slum dog."

"It's understandable why people are unhappy with the title." Indian author Chitra Divakaruni told the

New York Times. "In Indian culture being called a dog is extremely rude.It is often used in films to

describe evil people."

However, others have been more positive. The Wall Street Journal in New York described Slumdog

as "the world's first globalized masterpiece (杰作)

While popular in the U. S. , the April Fools Day tradition is even more prevalent in Europ
ean countries, such as France and Great Britain. Although the roots of the traditional tricking are unclear, the French and the British both have claims on the origin of the celebration. One theory holds that the first April Fools Day was on April 1 of the year when King of France instituted the new calendar. This new system placed the day that had formerly been the first day of a new year on April 1. Many people were reluctant to adjust to the new calendar and continued to celebrate New Years Day on what had become the first day of April. Thus, they became the first April Fools. An English story about the day, however, holds that it began sometime during the 1200s. At the time, King John of England was in the habit of making a road out of nearly every path he walked regularly. The citizens of one particular farm village were aware of this. To avoid having their green meadows and pastures disturbed with one of the kings roads, they built a fence that prevented the king from walking through their countryside. The king sent a group of messengers to inform. that they must remove the barrier. Upon hearing that the King was planning to do this, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own. When the messengers arrived, they found what appeared to be a community of lunatics, with people behaving in a bizarre manner, throwing things and running around wildly. The messengers, alarmed at what they had found, reported to King John that these people were so mad as to be beyond punishment. So, the villagers saved their farmland by tricking the King. In Great Britain, tradition only allows April Fools tricks from midnight to noon on April 1. Those who try to play tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves.
