Twelve years ago, oceanographer Captain Charles Moore was skippering his yacht the Alguita in the North Pacific. He sailed into a mass of floating plastic rubbish which took him and his crew a week to cross. This floating rubbish dump is now called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and doubles the size of the USA.
The United Nations says there are now 18,000 pieces of plastic in every square kilometre of sea everywhere in the world. A walk along any beach will give you some idea of the seriousness of plastic pollution.
The trouble is, when we throw out plastic with the trash, the plastic doesn"t go away. Plastic does not biodegrade. It photo degrades into smaller and smaller particles which then enter the food chain.
Plastics contain cancer-causing chemicals along the food chain in increasing concentrations and end up in our fish and chips, along with hormone disruptors. Scientists try to tell us that we are killing ourselves as well as other animals. At least 200 species are, as I speak, being killed by plastic.
Whales, dolphins, turtles and albatross confuse floating plastic, especially shopping bags and six pack rings, with jellyfish.
Some countries have rebelled and banned plastic bags. And the first was brave Bangladesh. Then China took the same decision. Botswana, Canada, Israel, Kenya, Rwanda, Singapore and South Africa have also banned plastic bags. Notice how many of the world"s richest countries are not on this list. It"s an absolute disgrace.
Think globally, act locally. A small Australian town is now one step ahead of the rest of the world. The inhabitants of Bundanoon in New South Wales have banned plastic bottles from the town.
We need to follow their example and eliminate plastic from our lives, take care of the earth and vote for people we think will do the same.
The writer says that we can get an idea of how much plastic rubbish there is in the oceans by________. 查看材料
A.looking at the sea
B.travelling across the USA
C.sailing across the Pacific
D.taking a walk along any beach

A: I made a very close study of the draft contract last night.
B: Any questions?
A: Yes.There are a few points which I'd like to bring up.First, the packing. It's stipulated in the contract that all the machine parts should be packed in wooden cases. This can be done with the machine parts, but it's impossible to pack a truck base like that.
B: I see.
A: Second, about the terms of payment.Your draft contract says that payment is to be made by D/P.This is not our practice. We prefer to have the payment made by L/C through a negotiating bank in France.
B: And…
A: And the third point is about arbitration. It's stipulated that arbitration shall take place in China. In all our past contracts signed with you, it was stipulated that arbitration took place in a third country.
B: Yes, that's right.
A: But how is it that this time you wish to have it carried out in China?
B: Shall we take up the matter point by point?
A: That's a good idea.
B: Now, the first point is about packing. We agree to a different packing for the truck.
A: This can easily be done.
B: Second, about terms of payment by L/C.
A: Thank you.
B: As for arbitration, in our dealings with many countries, arbitration is to be carried out in China. The Arbitration Commission of CCPIT enjoys a high prestige among friendly companies.Personally I hope you'll accept this clause.Furthermore, the disputes that have arisen from our business transaction were all settled through friendly consultations.Very rarely was arbitration restored to.
A: I see.OK.The new arbitration clause is acceptable. Is there anything else?
B: As far as the contract stipulations are concerned, there is nothing more.Thank you very much.
A: When should we sign the contract?
B: We'I1 revise the contract this evening, and have it ready to be signed tomorrow morning at ten. How's that?
A: Perfect.

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy,(62)its new Dirty Pig campaign, said it was the first time it had investigated which(63)made up "littered England" and the same names appeared again and again. "We(64)litterers for dropping this fast food litter(65)the first place but also believe the results havepertinent(相关的) messages for the fast food(66). McDonald's, Greggs, KFC and Subway need to do more to(67)littering by their customers."
He recognised efforts made by McDonald's,(68)placing litter bins and increasing litter patrols, but its litter remained "all too prevalent". All fast food chains should reduce(69)packaging, he added. Companies could also reduce prices(70)those who stayed to eat food on their premises, offer money-offvouchers(代金券) or other(71)for those who returned packaging and put more bins at(72)points in local streets, not just outside their premises. A(73)for McDonald's said: "We do our best. Obviously we ask all our customers to dispose of litter responsibly." Trials of more extensive, all-day litter patrols were(74)in Manchester and Birmingham. KFC said it took its(75)for litter management "very seriously", and would introduce a programme to reduce packaging(76)many products. Subway said that it worked hard to(77)the impact of litter on communities,(78)it was "still down to the(79)customer to dispose of their litter responsibly". Greggs said it recognised the " continuing challenge for us all ",(80)having already taken measures to help(81)the issue.
