At 13 years old, Keith Peiris is the world's youngest CEO(Chief Executive Officer). But he says that there is nothing different about him compared to other children his age.

Keith launched(开办)a website for his own company at the age of 10. While other children were receiving awards for their achievements, Peiris was giving scholarships from Cyberteks Design, his own company, to pupils at his school.

Though he's just a teenager, he is already experiencing the pains of adult life.

"At the moment it is hard to compete with local companies in Shanghai because of the cost, especially of hardware."

"At first, my age will be the largest issue, but in the end that won't be important," he added, "Once I get more and more clients(客户),we will build a reputation(信誉) and people will take me more seriously."

Peiris answers questions quickly and is very articulate (表达能力强的)for his age. He said he had come to know Shanghai pretty well through TV programmes shown on CNN before his trip.

The Greek historian Herodotus once made a list of the most extraordinary structures in the
world, which was known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Swiss explorer Bernard Weber thought the old list needed updating. He wanted everyone to vote for the worlds cultural treasures. In 2001, the New Seven Wonders Foundation was set up, inviting people around the world to vote. A group of building experts later reduced the list to 21 places. From 2006 to July 6, 2007, people around the world voted on their favorite places by using the Internet and cell-phones. There were about one hundred million votes in all. The results were announced on July 7 in a ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal. Here is the new list of world wonders. The Great Wall of China is one of the largest building projects on earth, extending for over 7 000 kilometers and built to defend against foreign invaders. The oldest parts of the wall were built over 2 600 years ago. More recent parts were built about 500 years ago. The emperor Qin Shihuang created the first united China about 2 200 years ago and connected the different parts of the wall into one huge system. Chiehen Itza is a temple city built by the Mayans over 1000 years ago in what is now Mexico. Many large stone structures were built during different periods with different styles. One holy building is a triangular-shaped(三角形的)step pyramid called the Temple of Kukulean. This huge structure has a staircase on each of the four sides that leads to the religious altar(祭坛)at the top. There are many other temples and even a large court area where the Mayans played ball games. Christ the Redeemer(基督像)is a large religious statue on a hill overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Catholic religious leaders in the city started planning the project in the 1920s. This 38 meter statue of Jesus was completed in 1931. It is made of concrete and soapstone materials. Christ the Redeemer was designed by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and the French sculptor Paul Landowski.

David Graddol , a language researcher and lecturer at the Open University in Britain , said that

David Graddol , a language researcher and lecturer at the Open University in Britain , said that , on the one hand , English is becoming a language of everyday usage in some countries in Northern Europe. "Something like 70%

of the Dutch population claim now that they can hold a conversation in English quite comfortably ," Mr. Graddol said. "For them , it is not a textbook-based foreign exercise. They are already exposed to English in the environment. People have learned a little bit of it before they get to school , and they can see immediately that it has some use in their lives. In countries like the Netherlands , Sweden or Denmark you need English to complete your education. "

"In other countries , however , English is more truly a foreign language ," said Mr. Graddol , whose consulting firm , The English Council produced a worldwide report titled "The Future of English" for the British Council a few years ago. "In some countries , like China , there is not very much English in the environment and people may be learning it from teachers who may not speak English very well themselves."

In a third group of countries , like India and Nigeria where English has been used a long time , distinct local varieties of the language are emerging , complete with their own

dictionaries , textbooks and literature.

"English is so important in these countries that people use it in part to create their own social and even national identity ," Mr. Craddol said. "When that happens , the language starts going its own way. The variety of English that proficient speakers in such countries are learning may not be terribly useful in an international context. "

"Thus , the very reason for the rise of English - its guarantee of mutual intelligibility among people of different cultures - could dissolve if the language continues to split up into a variety of ‘ Englishes’."

21. 30 % of the Dutch population claim they can communicate in English very freely. ()

22. People in the Netherlands , Sweden or Denmark use English to complete their education. ()

23. According to the English Council , in some countries like China there is not very much English in the environment and English is more truly a foreign language. ()

24. In countries where distinct local varieties of English are emerging like India , people no longer use their native language. ()

25. According to the speaker , English is so popular in some European countries that it has started going its own way because people use it in part to create their own social and even national identity. ()

Some Stanislaus County farmers are having a tough time harvesting their crops because of a
shortage of workers. For years Vito Chiesa, who farms near Hughson, has grown peaches, but these days he s replacing them with almonds (杏仁). " This is where I started losing peaches," he pointed out to NewslO reporter Tim Daly. "Just like that, we got the bulldozers(推土机)and pushed. You re going to see almonds out there next year." Farmers can t find enough workers to handle crops like peaches that require careful hand picking because machines would damage the ripe peaches and then the farmer could not sell them. Some farmers will soon switch to growing almonds. Almonds are harvested differently. They require fewer workers because trees are mechanically shaken. The almonds fall on the ground and then are gathered up. The farmer does not have to hire many workers to pick the almonds off the trees. Some farmers think there are a couple of reasons for the labor shortage, which is even worse in the southern Central Valley. One is that workers make higher wages doing construction work and there is plenty of that in the Central Valley. Another is that since the September 11, 2001 attacks, there is more enforcement at the state s border with Mexico, resulting in fewer workers coming into California. One solution might be to allow Mexican workers to work here as guests, so people who want to work and contribute to the economy of the U.S. can have the opportunity to provide for themselves and family. That would also help the farm labor situation without making the country less secure. Farmers say that unless things change, more produce will come from South America and China where labor is cheap and there is more competition.

The farmers are reported to have difficulty in______.

A.hiring harvest workers

B.selecting the right fruit to grow

C.selling their farm produce

D.changing their way of farming

Loss due to delayed arrival of the goods

In 2006 an import and export corporation exported 1 000 tons of walnut to a British company on the basis of CIF. Payment is made by irrevocable letter of credit at sight. The terms of delivery is subject to the arrival of the goods in Avonmouth on December 2 ,2006 , which is a special item. Our violation to this term resultecl in some economic losses. The basic items in the contract as follows :

Shipment: To be shipped during Oct. 2006 from China port to Avonmouth. The relevant UC opened by the Buyer will reach the Seller before the end of Sept. 2006. Seller undertakes to guarantee that the carrying steamer shall arrive at the named port of destination not later than Dec.2,2006. The actual date of her arrival at the named port of destination will be subject to the actual date of her arrival at the port of destination named verified by the relevant carrier or her agents.

Special terms and conditions on Prices :

(2)In case the carrying streamer arrives at Avonmouth later than Dec. 2,2006, the Seller shall agree to have the contract cancelled if so requested by the Buyer and if the payment has been already collected , it shall be refunded to the Buyer. Notice of the request for cancellation of contract is in all cases to be made to the Seller within 48 (forty-eight) hours after the time of arrival of the steamer at Avonmouth, otherwise the delivery shall be deemed as having been accepted by the Buyer.

After signing the contract , our corporation, through a forwarding agent, hired a vessel whose nationality is Sweden. The vessel started out on its voyage after loading on Oct. 5, 2006, and it was estimated that it would arrive at the destination on Dec. 2, 2006 if everything is in order.

Unfortunately, during the voyage, an engine of the vessel stopped working. Our corporation sent a towboat to drag the vessel forward considering the large amount of the shipments. But after the vessel's arrival at Avonmouth it was several hours later than the stipulated time of delivery (Dec. 2,2006) in the contract. Seeing the price of walnut was falling down in the local market, the Buyer notified our corporation that he refused to take delivery of the goods. Our company had to ask some agents to help sell all the goods on the spot in order to reduce the damage.

In this transaction, the loss of our party suffered was about USD600 000.

Questions :

(1) For walnuts are seasonal merchandises, usually they are sold before Christmas day. When exporting this kind of' goods ,what factor do you think is very important?

(2) In this case , the nature of the contract has changed from the Shipment Contract to Arrival Contract , why?

(Translate the case into Chinese and then answer the question)

Helpful hint: Some clauses of this contract change the characteristics of CIF contract.
