Passage "From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of it sin habi
tants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of SLEEPY HOLLOW , and its rustic lads are called the Sleepy Hollow Boys throughout all the neighboring country. Drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere. Some say that the place was bewitched by a high German doctor, during the early days of the settlement; others, that an old Indian chief, the product or wizard of his tribe, held his powwows there before the country was discovered by Master Hendrick Hudson. " Questions:

Who is the writer of this short story from which the passage is taken?

Jules Verne's most famous book is "Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea".
(A "league" is an old word 1 about three miles.) In those days submarines had not been 2 , but he describes an underwater ship very like a modern submarine. The captain of the submarine, called Captain Nemo, and his men have many strange adventures and find many strange things 3 the bottom of the ocean. He was a very good 4 . His characters often did surprising and sometimes impossible things, but they always seemed 5 real people. In another book, "Around the World in Eighty Days", Jules Verne creates Mr. Fogg, the hero, 6 made a bet that he would travel around the world in eighty days. Nowadays this may seem 7 to you, but in those days there were no planes or even cars. Mr. Fogg and his servant traveled in many different 8 , even on an elephant at one time! If you want to know their result, you should read the book. In the old days, when schools wanted to communicate with parents, they sent a letter home.
Now, in addition to email, schools and parents can connect through social media like Twitter, Facebook and Skype. The Houston Independent School District in Texas has more than two hundred thousand students. Most of them come from lower-income families. Education Week recently reported on a digital literacy training program that the district has just started for parents. The school district with help from Microsoft has established computer training centers for parents at five of its campuses. Other schools around the country are also increasing their digital services and not just in English. Many schools provide information in Spanish and other languages. Free online translation sites can also help parents stay informed about their children s education. Some school systems also give parents online access to their children s grades and school work. Six hundred students attend Knapp Elementary School near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Principal Joe Mazza says almost one in five students come from Bangladesh and twelve percent from South Korea. The school diversity is clear as soon as visitors enter the building. " So if you are walking in our school lobby, you are going to see English, Bengali, Korean, Spanish and all of the Finnish in the school. Now we feel that a welcoming, bright, informative, child-centered lobby really helps parents feel welcomed, honored and respected."

Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a means for schools to communicate with parents?

A.Social media.

B.Parent meetings.

C.Letters.

D.Email.

The sea lay like an unbroken mirror all around the pine-girt, lonely shores of Orr's Island. Tal
l, kingly spruces wore their regal crowns of cones high in air, sparkling with diamonds of clear exuded gum; vast old hemlocks of primeval growth while feathery larches, turned to brilliant gold by autumn frosts, lighted up the darker shadows of the evergreens. It was one of those hazy, calm, dissolving days of Indian summer, when everything is so quiet that the faintest kiss of the wave on the beach can be heard, and white clouds seem to faint into the blue of the sky, and soft swathing bands of violet vapor make all earth look dreamy, and give to the sharp, clear-cut outlines of the northern landscape all those mysteries of light and shade which impart such tenderness to Italian scenery.

The funeral was over, -the tread of many feet, bearing the heavy burden of two broken lives, had been to the lonely graveyard, and had come again, -each footstep lighter and more unconstrained as each one went his way from the great old tragedy of Death to the common cheerful life.

The solemn black clock stood swaying with its eternal "tick-tock, tick-cock," in the kitchen of the brown house on Orr's Island. There was there that sense of a stillness that can be left, -such as settles down on a dwelling when any of its inmates have passed though its doors for the last time, to go whence they shall not return. The best room was shut up and darkened, with only so much light as could fall through a little heart-shaped hole in the window-shutter, -for except on solemn visits, or prayer-meeting or weddings, or funerals, that room formed no part of the daily family scenery.

The kitchen was clean and ample, with a great open fireplace and wide stone hearth, and oven on one side, and rows of old-fashioned splint-bottomed chairs against the wall. A table scoured no snowy whiteness, and a little work-stand whereon lay the Bible, the Missionary Herald, and the Weekly Christian Mirror, before named, formed the principal furniture. One feature, however, must not be forgotten, -a great sea-chest, which had been the companion of Zephaniah through all the countries of the earth. Old, and battered, and unsightly it looked, yet report said that there was good store within of that which men for the most part respect more than anything else; and, indeed, it proved often when a deed of grace was to be done -when a woman was suddenly made a widow in a coast gale, or a fishing -smack was run down in the fogs off the banks, leaving in some neighboring cottage a family of orphans, -in all such cases, the opening of this sea-chest was an event of good omen to the bereaved; for Zephaniah had a large heart and a large hand, and was apt to take it out full of silver dollars when once it went in. So the ark of the covenant could not have been looked on with more reverence than the neighbors usually showed to Captain Pennel's sea-chest.

In England, Christmas Day and Good Friday have been holidays for religious reasons (阅读理解)

In England, Christmas Day and Good Friday have been holidays for religious reasons since the establishment of Christianity in the country. Christmas is celebrated on December 25, not Christmas Eve as in several other European countries. The other public holidays (or "Bank Holidays") are Easter Monday, May Day (May 1st), the Spring Bank Holiday (the last Monday in May), the Summer Bank Holiday (the last Monday in August), December 26th (Boxing Day), and New Year's Day. The term "Bank Holiday" goes back to the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, which owes its name to the fact that banks are closed on the days specified.

Boxing Day takes its name from the old custom of giving employees or tradesmen (such as milkman) an annual present or "Christmas box" on that day

Easter Monday is generally regarded as an unofficial consecration (祭祀) of Spring. It used to be the day on which the ladies would parade in the parks, wearing new dresses and hats. Although this custom is dying out, the tradition still provides the ladies with a pretext for buying spring clothes.

The August Bank Holiday is probably the most popular one of the year, partly because it comes at a time when children are not at school In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) is also a Bank Holiday. St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. It is curious that St. George's Day (April 23rd) not a public holiday in England though St. George is the Patron Saint of England. However, the flag of St George (a red cross on a white background) or the Union Jack is flown on that day, particularly by churches of the Church of England.
