Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isnt stopping a European comp

Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isnt stopping a European company from devising a plan to send four people to the Red Planet within the next few years. (78)This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022and eventually establish a permanent colony on the planet. "Everything we need to go to Mars exists," said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. "We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the setdement for humans. For a one-way mission, all the technology exists. " Yet the four astronauts (宇航员) chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars Ones thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. (79)The biggest road block could be the missions huge cost ($ 6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet. Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars. " Its even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars," said Adam Baker—senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. "The sheer size of the rockets youd need to do this would be absolutely colossal. "

According to Project Mars One, humans could send four people to Mars within the next ______years.

A.seven

B.eight

C.ten

D.six

A man from New York is suing four big fast-food companies. Caesar Barber is going to court
because he says that high-fat foods at McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, and KFC Corporation destroyed his health. Barber says that he ate at these restaurants four or five times a week for many years. He claims that this diet made him very overweight. According to Mr. Barber, obesity (肥胖症) gave him diabetes(糖尿病) ,high blood pressure, and two heart attacks. When a reporter asked him why he ate there so often,he said,"I was single,it was quick, and Im not a very good cook. " Barbers lawyer,Samuel Hirsch, says that the suit has two different purposes. The first is to make fast-food restaurants offer healthier foods in smaller amounts. The suit also asks that fast foods have warning labels similar to labels on cigarettes. Mr. Hirsch says that these labels are necessary because the effects of fast foods are similar to the effects of cigarettes, alcohol, and illegal drugs such as heroin. Two others may soon join Barbers suit. One is Frances Winn, a 57-year-old retired nurse. Ms. Winn says that she has eaten at fast-food restaurants at least twice a week since 1975. She says that this habit has caused several health problems, including high blood pressure. Isreal Bradley,59,said eating a pound of French fries every week gave him high blood pressure and diabetes. Officials of the fast-food industry attacked the legal action. National Restaurant Association representative Katharine Kim called it ridiculous. KFC spokeswoman Amy Sherwood claimed KFC offers several kinds of foods for people who want to eat healthier. Legal expert Walter Olson agreed that the suit had litde chance of success. He said that people were free to make different choices. Whether or not the suit is successful, there is no doubt that Americans have a weight problem. Medical experts say that obesity will soon be Americas number one killer. They have encouraged fast-food companies to offer healthier foods.

What does the word" suing" in the first sentence mean?

A.Attacking.

B.Mentioning.

C.Complaining about.

D.Taking a legal action against.

第10题

The timing of flu season is a little hard to predict. Part of what makes it unpredictable
is that scientists still don t understand exactly why we have one at all. There have been lots of theories: One theory is that people spend more time indoors, with the windows closed, breathing each other s air. Other scientists have argued that cold of winter weakens our immune systems. A third theory is that the flu virus lives in the cold, dry air, but suffers in the warm, humid air. For a while, scientists had a hard time testing these theories: they needed to run experiments, but researchers aren t allowed to infect humans with illnesses, and most lab animals arent affected by the flu the same way people are. In 2007, a medical researcher named Peter Palese found an 80-year-old journal article that reported that guinea pigs (豚鼠)get infected and pass on the flu just like humans. Palese decided to test Theory 3. The research team led by Palese ran several experiments and in each experiment, they injected half the guinea pigs with influenza A (the common flu), and put them in a box next to a box of uninfected animals. At a temperature of 41 degrees, all four of the exposed guinea pigs caught the flu, but when Palese repeated the experiment at 68 degrees, only one of the animals was infected. And when he ran the test at 86 degrees, none of the exposed animals got sick. The researchers also ran experiments where they varied the humidity in the room but kept the temperature constant: the drier the air, they found, the more animals got sick. Palese s study showed that the influenza virus does spread more effectively in cold, dry air.

What does Paragraph 3 mainly discuss?

A.The direction for future research.

B.The necessity of running more tests.

C.The difficulty of testing the theories.

D.The cost of animal experiments.

第11题

There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary gready in the speed a
nd efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages , perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads.Consequendy, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points. A type of reading which necessitates careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practice this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively litde attention to the general meaning of the text.

The author claims that there is a difference in reading speed______.

A.among readers who have different experience

B.among all the readers

C.between the poorly educated and the highly educated

D.among the highly educated people
