My father had a small business, employing about 15 people at any given time. We sold all s

orts of dairy products, and many more, from a small store in front of the dairy building. During the summer months, rows of eager tourists lined up at that ice -cream counter for a taste of my father s exquisite homemade ice cream. Twenty-six years ago, Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economics teacher, was visiting a vill

age when he met a woman who made bamboo baskets. She couldnt afford to buy the bamboo to make the baskets, so she had to borrow the money from the bamboo sellers and then pay them a large part of the profit from each one she sold. There was so little money left for her to keep that she couldnt afford to buy more bamboo, so she had to borrow more money. And so the cycle continued with no way out for her. She couldnt borrow money from friends or family because they were as poor as she was. She couldnt borrow from the bank because she had no land to guarantee that she would pay back the loan. Yunus went around the village and found 41 people who were in the same position—trapped in a cycle of poverty with no escape. When he added up the amount of money that they needed to break free from the cycle, it came out to just twenty seven dollars. As Yunus says, — I felt ashamed of myself for being part of a society which could not provide even 27 dollars for 41 hard-working, skilled human beings. He lent them the money and told them to pay it back whenever they could. He got all of it back, so he went to other villages and did the same thing. He always got his money back. The official banks didnt want to get involved in what he was doing, so Yunus started his own bank. The Grameen bank was born, and with it there is a new approach to lending money-micro-credit. The bank now lends over a billion dollars to more than two million borrowers, 96% of them women, and involving more than half of the villages in Bangladesh. The repayment is 99%. The rural economy of the country has improved gready since the bank started. And the success has spread. This year it was estimated that there are now over 7 ,000 micro-credit organizations in the world, lending to over 16 million of the poorest people.

I saw an ad for a device that allows your dog to talk to you. Bow Lingual, a Japanese inve

ntion, entered the American market a couple of weeks ago. Named " The Dog Translator," it sold more than 250,000 units before heading here. A radio microphone attaches to your dog s collar, and a handheld receiver "translates" barks into 200 different phrases. Our dog, Murphy, for instance, has never had any problem whatsoever communicating with us. Not once in 13 years. Odd as it seems, we can figure out quite quickly what s on her mind. Just the cock of her head will often do it. Translation: " Surely you re taking me with you." Sometimes it s a solitary bark at the kitchen door after dinner. Translation: " You forgot my treat, Buster!" And sometimes its 100 barks in a row. Translation: "The mailman is here! The mailman is here! Cant you hear him attacking our house？" But I think I witnessed the ultimate dog communication technique years ago. It was a neighbor s dog. I cant remember the breed or name. Whenever frustrated with her family, which appeared to be quite often, she would stroll into the living room, turn her back to them and sit directly in front of the TV they were watching. And pee. I've been going home for lunch ever since I started school. I never liked eating in the ca

feteria(自助食堂) although in tile seventh grade, because all the other boys were doing it and thought it was cool. I washed dishes in the junior high school lunchroom once in a while in exchange for a free lunch. But I like going back to my own house at once.

Mom is always there; she had soup ready in the breakfast room by the time that Ann and Jim and I get home. Ann and Jim have never gone in for the cafeteria, either. Our house in only about a ten-minute walk from the school building, so we can make it back in plenty of time.

There's something about eating in the cafeteria--and not leaving the high school from morning until afternoon -- that feels a little like being in prison. By the end of the morning, I've got to get out of the building. And Mom never seems to mind fixing lunch for us; she never suggests that we eat in the cafeteria.

It's really the only time we have to be alone with her. In the morning Dad's there, and by the time I get home after messing around(混时间) after school, he's usually at home from work. So the time that Mom and I talk together is usually at lunch.
