Many of us believe that a person's mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this not true
. According to Dr. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California. She had studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline as was expected.

However, there was some decline in their psychomotor (精神运动的) speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik's studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only with those in their 30s and 40s, but with those in their 60s and 70s as well.

It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call "loss of memory" is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new things at too fast a pace. In the cases where the older person's mind really seems to decay, it is not necessary a sign of decay due to old age. Often it is simply as sign of a depressed emotional state.

How does TV affect our lives? It can he very helpful to people who carefully choose th
e shows that they watch. Television can increase our knowledge of the outside world; there are high-quality programs that help us understand many fields of study: science, medicine, the arts, and so on. Moreover, TV benefits very old people who can't often leave the house, as well as patients in hospitals. It also offers non-native speakers the advantage of daily informal language practice; they can increase their vocabulary and practice listening On the other hand, there are several serious disadvantages to TV. Of course, it provides us with a pleasant way to relax and spend our free time, but in some countries, people watch the TV for an average of six hours or more a day. Many children stare at a TV screen for more hours each day than they do anything else, including studying and sleeping It's clear that the TV has a powerful influence on their lives and that its influence is often negatk'e. Recent studies show that alter only thirty seconds of TV, a person' s brain 'relaxes" the same way that it does just before the person falls asleep. Another effect of TV on the human brain is that it seems to cause poor concentration. Children who view a lot of TV can often concentrate on a subject for only fifteen to twenty minutes; they can pay attention only for the amount of time between commercials

Another disadvantage is that TV often causes people to become dissatisfied with their own lives. Real life does not seem as exciting to these people as the lives of actors on the screen. To many people, TV becomes more real than reality, and their own lives seem boring. Also, many people get upset or depressed when they can't solve problems in real life as quickly as TV actors seem to. On the screen, actors solve serious problems in a half-hour program or a thirty-second commercial

Before a child is fourteen years old, he or she views eleven thousand murders on the TV. He or she begins to believe that there is nothing strange about fights, killings, and other kinds of violence. Many studies show that people become more violent after certain programs. They may even do the things that they saw in a violent show

The most negative effect of the TV might be people's addiction to it. People often feel a strange and powerful need to watch TV even when they don't enjoy it. Addiction to a TV screen is similar to drug or alcohol addiction, people almost never believe they are addicted

Ballet for children and teenagers

It can take a long time to reach a professional level in ballet, so most dancers begin their training very young. It is essential that very young dancers learn the ballet movements properly right from the beginning. 【1】 This is because it is usually more difficult to change old habits than to learn new ones.

The first thing that young children who are interested in learning to dance often do is attend creative movement classes, where they can practice basic skills like jumping and turning, and just have fun. 【2】 In addition, some people recommend that they should learn either to sing or play instrument.

Young people who decide they want to have a ballet career can attend a dance school. Here, students not only study normal school subjects but also do daily dance training. 【3】 And the whole dance-school environment is set up to support the young people’s artistic development; it allows them to focus on their dance more easily, and prepares them for their future. But how can a young dancer and their parents tell which dance school is the most suitable? 【4】 The older students taking part in it should clearly have more highly-developed ballet skills than the younger dancers.

By the time they are 16 or 17, many ballet dancers are entering ballet competitions and taking classes at professional studies. 【5】 It is important for young dancers to know how well they are doing, because the dance world is very competitive and the training is hard; not everyone makes it to the top.

A.For all these reasons, they enjoy meeting other dancers.

B.Listening to different styles of music also helps.

C.Travelling long distances to dance schools can be tiring, too.

D.Attending one of their public performances is a good way of finding out.

E.If they develop poor techniques, they may have problems later on.

F.This allows them to compare themselves with teenagers from other schools.

G.That means they do not waste time travelling from home to dance classes.

"Freshman fifteen" is a term which means fifteen pounds, or about seven kilograms— the wei
ght students might expect to gain in their first year of college. People used to talk about the "freshman ten." Before that, it was the "freshman five." Are freshman more inflated, or just the expression? The fact is, many young men and women do put on extra weight when they start college. Some schools that have done research on the issue including Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have found that freshmen gain an average of four pounds during their first twelve weeks, the equivalent of two kilograms. If weight gain continues at this rate, how long before they put on fifteen pounds? The answer is forty-five weeks, or almost a year. The next question is, why do so many freshmen gain weight? The answers listed by experts are not so surprising. One is poor diet: College students often eat foods high in fat and sugar and starch with no parents around to say no to junk food. Students may also miss meals. They could be in class or studying or just ... busy. In any case, those who miss meals are more likely to overeat when they do have food. Also, freshmen often use food to put their mind at ease. They have college pressures to deal with. Not only that, many are living away from home for the first time. Another reason college students gain weight is that they often do not get enough exercise. Finally, there is something else that can add up to the "freshman five" or ten or fifteen, alcohol. Alcohol is high in calories and this is especially true of beer. And, no, freshmen are not supposed to be drinking, not unless they are twenty-one, the legal drinking age in America. For many college students, the extra weight they put on in their freshman year can be as hard to escape as term papers and final exams.

Paragraph 1 is centered on______.

A.why freshmen put on weight in college

B.why freshmen worry about their weight

C.how the "freshman fifteen" gets its name

D.how the "freshman fifteen" amazes freshmen
