The other day I heard an American say to a Chinese student of English "You speak very good
English." But the student answered, "No, no. My English is very poor." the foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the student had not heard him clearly, he said, "Yes indeed, you speak English very well." But the Chinese student still kept saying "No. "In the end the foreigner gave up and was at a loss what to say. What's wrong with the student's answer? It is because he did not accept a compliment<赞美的话>as the English people do. He should have said "Thank you" instead of "no". He actually understood what the American had said. But he thought he should be modest. If he said "Thank you", that would mean he was too proud. According to the western culture, if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say "Thank you". If someone says to a woman "You look so beautiful with the new clothes on", she should be very happy and answer "Thank you". In our country we think being modest is a virtue and showing off a bad thing. But in the west, if you are modest and say" No, I'm afraid I can't do it well", then the others will take it for granted that you really cannot do it. If you often say "no", you will certainly be looked down upon by others. If asking for a job, one says something like "Let me have a try on the job" instead of "Yes, I can certainly do it," he or she will never expect to get it. So in the west one should always be confident. Without self-confidence, he cannot go anywhere. Confidence is of great importance to one in a country where competition is quite keen.

Why was the American surprised at the Chinese student's answer?

A.Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.

B.Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.

C.Because he wouldn't like others to say "No".

D.Because the way to accept a compliment in China is not the same as that in the western countries.

English has never been the only language in use over the British Isles , and it certainly is not now! Welsh is still used in Wales. Some Welsh people still speak it as their mother tongue , and it is widely taught in Welsh schools. Some people in Scotland and in Ireland still use a language that is related to Welsh. It is called Gaelic. These languages have a long history in these islands - longer than the history of English. In addition , people from

overseas have settled in England quite recently during this century. In some industrial cities , though not generally in Britain , you find groups of people who speak Polish , and other groups speaking the languages of the Indian subcontinent. A survey of North London schools in the early 1980' s found that nearly a third of the children spoke a language other than English at home.

The majority of the 55 million people living in England use English all the time. Standard English , that is , written English , is in use throughout Britain. Spoken English , however , sounds very different in different parts of the country. There is a story , a play. by the famous writer George Bernard Shaw , about a professor of English Language who can tell you someone' s address when he hears that person speak! That is exaggeration of course. Not even a Professor , who has studied the sounds of English all his life , can really do that. However ,it is true hat most people who have lived for a long time in Britain can tell a number of things about the people as soon as they speak! Usually we cannot tell the speaker' s address

, but we can guess the part of the country where the person comes from. We can tell how well educated he or she is too! If an international user of English , like anyone of you here , happens to meet speakers from , say , the North or the West of England , you may find them hard to understand. Unless you understand what is going on your confidence in your ability to use the language may be badly shaken.

36. Gaelic is related to Welsh. ()

37. Welsh is not taught in schools anymore. ()

38. One third of the 55 million people in England speak other languages besides English at home ()

39. Written English is in use throughout Britain but spoken English sounds different in different parts of the country. ()

40. Most people who have lived for a long time in Britain can tell how well educated a person is by the way he/ she speaks. ()

I saw an ad for a device that allows your dog to talk to you. Bow Lingual, a Japanese inve
ntion, entered the American market a couple of weeks ago. Named " The Dog Translator," it sold more than 250,000 units before heading here. And dont forget that it was sold at the price of $ 120 each. Its quite simple, really. A radio microphone attaches to your dog s collar, and a handheld receiver "translates" barks into 200 different phrases. The device determines your dogs emotion at the moment: happy, sad, frustrated, on-guard, assertive and needy. (In case you have a dog that barks only in Japanese or Korean, it comes with those translations, too.) As interesting as this new device is—again, I m kicking myself here—any dog owner worth his Milk-Bones knows this might not be all that necessary a purchase. Our dog, Murphy, for instance, has never had any problem whatsoever communicating with us. Not once in 13 years. Odd as it seems, we can figure out quite quickly what s on her mind. Just the cock of her head will often do it. Translation: " Surely you re taking me with you." Sometimes it s a solitary bark at the kitchen door after dinner. Translation: " You forgot my treat, Buster!" And sometimes its 100 barks in a row. Translation: "The mailman is here! The mailman is here! Cant you hear him attacking our house?" But I think I witnessed the ultimate dog communication technique years ago. It was a neighbor s dog. I cant remember the breed or name. All I remember is how bright she was. She had no need for Bow Lingual. Whenever frustrated with her family, which appeared to be quite often, she would stroll into the living room, turn her back to them and sit directly in front of the TV they were watching. And pee. No translation needed. And you need not be smart or rich to figure that out.

We can infer from the passage that sale of "The Dog Translator" in Japan______.

A.was considered a failure

B.was quite successful

C.was relatively satisfactory

D.was relatively unsatisfactory

Sixteen-year-old Maria was waiting in line at the airport in Santo Domingo. She was leaving her native country to join her sister in the United States. She spoke English very well. Though she was very happy she could go abroad, she was feeling sad at leaving her family and friends. As she was thinking all about this, she suddenly heard the airline employee asking her to pick up her luggage and put it on the scales (称). Maria pulled and pulled. The bag was too heavy and she just couldn't lift it up. The man behind her got very impatient. He, too, was waiting to check in his luggage.

"What's wrong with this girl?" He said, "Why doesn't she hurry up?" He moved forward and placed his bag on the counter, hoping to check in first. He was in a hurry to get a good seat.

Maria was very angry, but she was very polite. And in her best English she said, "Why are you so upset? There are enough seats for everyone on the plane. If you are in such a hurry, why can't you give me a hand with my luggage?"

The man was surprised to hear Maria speak English. He quickly picked up her luggage and stepped back. Everyone was looking at him with disapproval.

16.Read Passage 1 , and then answer Questions 16-20 briefly. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

Verbal skills in another culture can generally be mastered if one studies hard enough. But nonverbal skills are much more difficult to learn. Nonverbal behavior. includes areas such as eye contact , facial expressions , postures , gestures , and the use of time , space , and territory. The messages sent by body language and the way we arrange time and space have always been open to interpretation. Does a raised eyebrow mean that your boss doubts your statement or just that she is seriously considering it? Does a closed door to an office mean that your coworker is angry or just that he is working on a project that requires concentration? Deciphering nonverbal communication is difficult for people who are culturally similar , and it is even more troublesome when cultures differ.

In Western cultures , for example , people perceive silence as negative. It suggests rejection , unhappiness , depression , regret , embarrassment , or ignorance. However , the Japanese admire silence and consider it a key to success. A Japanese proverb says , "Those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know." Over 60 percent of Japanese businesswomen said that they would prefer to marry silent men. Silence is equated with wisdom.

16. According to the author , what does nonverbal communication include?

17. What is the main idea of Paragraph One?

18. "Those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know." What does this Japanese proverb imply?

19. Understanding body language within the same culture group is very easy , is it?

20. What does silence mean in Western cultures?
