In the old days, when schools wanted to communicate with parents, they sent a letter home.
Now, in addition to email, schools and parents can connect through social media like Twitter, Facebook and Skype. The Houston Independent School District in Texas has more than two hundred thousand students. Most of them come from lower-income families. Education Week recently reported on a digital literacy training program that the district has just started for parents. The school district with help from Microsoft has established computer training centers for parents at five of its campuses. Other schools around the country are also increasing their digital services and not just in English. Many schools provide information in Spanish and other languages. Free online translation sites can also help parents stay informed about their children s education. Some school systems also give parents online access to their children s grades and school work. Six hundred students attend Knapp Elementary School near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Principal Joe Mazza says almost one in five students come from Bangladesh and twelve percent from South Korea. The school diversity is clear as soon as visitors enter the building. " So if you are walking in our school lobby, you are going to see English, Bengali, Korean, Spanish and all of the Finnish in the school. Now we feel that a welcoming, bright, informative, child-centered lobby really helps parents feel welcomed, honored and respected."

Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a means for schools to communicate with parents?

A.Social media.

B.Parent meetings.

C.Letters.

D.Email.

Planning is a very important activity in our lives. It can give pleasure and even excit
ement, but cause quite severe headaches. The more significant the task ahead, the more careful the planning required.Getting to school or to work on time is a task requiring little or no planning. It is almost a routine.A month’s touring holiday abroad, or better still, getting married, is a different matter altogether. If the holiday involves a church wedding, with 50 guests, a reception, a honeymoon in Italy, and returning to a new home, this requires even more planning to make sure that is successful.Planning is our way of trying to ensure success and of avoiding costly failures we cannot afford. It is equally essential to mankind as a whole, to nations, to families and to each individual; the scale may vary, but the degree of importance does not.(英译中)

In has been shown that children who smoke have certain characteristics.Compared with
non-smokers they are more rebellious, their work deteriorates as they move up school, they are more likely to leave school early, and are more often delinquent and sexually precocious. Many of these features can be summarized as anticipation of adulthood.

There are a number of factors which determine the onset of smoking, and these are largely psychological and social. They include availability of cigarettes, curiosity, rebelliousness, appearing tough, anticipation of adulthood, social confidence, the example of parents and teachers, and smoking by friends and older brothers and sisters.

It should be much easier to prevent children from starting to smoke than to persuade adults to give up the habit once established, but in fact this has proved very difficult. The example set by people in authority, especially parents, health care workers, and teachers, is of prime importance.School rules should forbid smoking by children on the premises. This rule has been introduced at Summerhill School where I spent my schooldays.

There is, however, a risk of children smoking just to rebel against the rules, and even in those schools which have tried to enforce no smoking by corporal punishment there is as much smoking as in other schools.Nevertheless, banning smoking is probably on balance beneficial.Teachers too should not smoke on school premises, at least not in front of children
