Michael, a typical American, stays at home on workdays. He plugs into his personal co
mputer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn't talk to any other human beings, and he doesn't see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his lifestyle. is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off form. contact with our fellow human being.

The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they're dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers' salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take our money from their accounts.

Another area that technology is changing is entertainment.

Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms.

(1)After work, Michael likes to ______.

A、listen to music at the concert hall

B、watch a movie in his living room

C、run a program on his computer in his office

D、play baseball with his workmates

A、Michael is a person full of imagination and he can make his dreams come true

B、Michael is not a real person but probably the lifestyle. does exist

C、Michael has ambitions but he can't make his dreams come true

D、Michael is a person full of imagination and his lifestyle. is common nowadays

(3)In the modern world, people will

B、Modern technology seems to be separating human beings.

C、We may no longer need to work in the office.

D、Modern technology makes it possible for us to work and entertain ourselves at home.

(5)What will the author most probably discuss after the last paragraph?

A、Games and sports.

B、Personal banking.

C、Music and films.

Scientists measured the impact that people have on the environment using a term called car
bon " footprint." That footprint reflects the amount of carbon dioxide that is emitted (排放)into the atmosphere as a result of someone s daily activities. Carbon footprints tend to be low for city dwellers(城镇居民). Living in a suburb outside a city, however, can turn that footprint into a bootprint. Energy researchers Christopher Jones and Daniel Kammen calculated carbon footprints for people in every zip code across the United States. People living in city centers had small footprints, the researchers found. "It is much easier to have a low carbon impact if your home is close to where you work, shop and play," explains Jones. Living within walking or biking distance cuts back on the amount of carbon dioxide associated with moving people by cars. And cities with extensive bus and subway networks allow people to travel great distances while keeping releases of climate-altering greenhouse gases low. Not everyone can afford to live in the city, however. And not everyone wants to. Rings of suburbs have popped up around major cities across the world. Suburbs offer more space, allowing people to build larger homes. Suburbs may offer better schools for a family s kids. But those homes are typically well beyond walking distance from where their owners work, play or learn. So people who live in suburbs often drive long distances. The new findings are an important contribution to climate research, says Matthew Kahn, an environmental economist at the University of California, who was not involved with the study. Kahn would like to see the analysis applied to other parts of the world—Europe, India and China, for instance. That would give scientists a better feel for how culture might mix with location to influence our carbon footprints.

"Footprint" refers to the amount of carbon dioxide released by______.

A.an individual

B.an industry

C.a region

D.a country

Perhaps no single monument in the USA is as famous as the Statue of Liberty. Standing on a
small island in New York Harbor, the crowned lady, holding aloft(在高处)in her right hand the torch of freedom and in her left hand a tablet which is inscribed(雕刻)"July 4th, 1776", is a symbol of American democracy. She is colossal. She is 151 foot high and the pedestal(基座)on which she stands is almost as much. An elevator takes visitors to the top of the pedestal, around which a balcony runs. A spiral(螺旋形)staircase goes up to the crown, and another to the torch. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the USA from France in 1886, as a mark of friendship and also in memory of the aid France gave the Americans during the American Revolution. For millions of immigrants, the Statue was their first sight of the promised Land, and for a few it was also the last, as they sailed back home again. About a mile from Liberty Island, there is another small island, called Ellis Island, which was looked up on with dread by the immigrants. For it was here that they had to wait their turn to be examined by doctors and officials. Most of the immigrants could not speak a word of English. But only two out of 100 immigrants were refused admission to New York City. Often the person refused turned out to be a grandmother or a weary, frightened girl mistakenly labeled "feebleminded. " Sometimes husbands and wives were parted because one of them happened to have a bad cough and was suspected of having tuberculosis(肺结核). New York City was a bitter disillusionment to some immigrants. Far from being a city paved with gold, it was a city teeming(充满)with overcrowded, unhealthy and unsafe ghettos. The immigrants looked for earlier immigrants of their own national or religion. So Italian, Polish, Irish, Jewish neighborhoods grew up. Because they could not speak English, the newcomers found it difficult to get work at once, and their living quarters were often slums. However, they found in the USA opportunities of bettering themselves. Today immigrants no longer have to endure the indignities(侮辱)of Ellis Island. The grim buildings were closed down in 1924. In 1976, Ellis Island became an historic monument.

Which of the following is the best title for this passage? ______

A.Gateway to the USA.

B.Statue of Liberty.

C.Ellis Island.

D.Immigrants of the USA.

Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isnt stopping a European company from devising a plan to send four people to the Red Planet within the next few years. (78)This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022and eventually establish a permanent colony on the planet. "Everything we need to go to Mars exists," said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. "We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the setdement for humans. For a one-way mission, all the technology exists. " Yet the four astronauts (宇航员) chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars Ones thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. (79)The biggest road block could be the missions huge cost ($ 6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet. Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars. " Its even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars," said Adam Baker—senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. "The sheer size of the rockets youd need to do this would be absolutely colossal. "

According to Project Mars One, humans could send four people to Mars within the next ______years.

A.seven

B.eight

C.ten

D.six

Allow yourself to dream, and think big big as the sky. The world’s greatest achievers are some of the best dreamers. Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart, Henry Ford, Susan B. Anthony, Andrew Carnegie, and hundreds more, all had dreams.

It’s okay to set small goals at first. In fact, that may be wise so you begin to understand the rewards and personal satisfaction that come from achieving your goals.

You can keep your goals secret or share them with someone close to you who may help you stay on track.

Another important step is to write your goal on paper. Post your written goal (or a photo of it) in your room where you can see it regularly. This will remind you of what you are working toward.
